Continuous Quality Improvement
Continuous Quality Improvement is the concept of promoting continuous quality and productivity improvement in the California State University through support for:
In fiscal year 93/94, benchmarking was launched as a means to accomplish several purposes simultaneously: to provide a means of self-appraisal and to provide a tangible means for compairson purposes.
Benchmarking then evolved into Process Mapping of certain tasks, which revealed that some outdated manual, and labor intensive practices persisted throughout the system. Furthermore, we discovered that the primary customer focus was misplaced and that the State Controller procedures overly controlled and burdened the process.
Between 1994 and 1998, other benchmarking studies, process mapping efforts and customer satisfaction surveys provided additional data that supported the continuous search for improving quality.
In the fall of 1998, the Steering Committee of the Chancellor's Office sponsored the first annual Quality Improvement Symposium that introduced quality improvement concepts and frameworks to campus' Vice Presidents of Administration, Finance, and Student Affairs. The idea was to link the previous quality improvement efforts (benchmarking, process mapping, and customer satisfaction surveys) to promote effective quality improvement changes at the campus level. Less than six months later, the concepts of certain methods and tools that support the development of these frameworks were introduced to campuses through:
You may have heard about Balanced Scorecard, a framework that places the goals of the organization (or division, department, unit) into four categories.
The Administration and Finance division's Strategic Plan provides an illustration of this tool.
Tina Morse, Special Assistant to the Vice President of the Administration and Finance Division, and Carmen Murillo-Moyeda have been appointed Quality Improvement Facilitator (QIF) and co-Facilitator respectively. These two serve as contacts for our campus as we strive to improve the quality of our services.
The QIF is responsible for keeping the campus staff and administrators abreast of current Quality Improvement programs and the progress of our implementation. If you have any questions please e-mail cqi@csusb.edu.
