Material Safety Data Sheet The University has no control over the contents of the sources in MSDS links and therefore cannot be held responsible for the accuracy of the information contained in them. If you have questions about the information you find in them, please contact the EHS office. WHAT IS AN MSDS? An MSDS, or Material Safety Data Sheet, is a regulatory required document developed by manufacturers and distributors of hazardous substances. The document is intended to provide a concise summary of information on the hazards associated with a particular material. This vital information about the material's contents, physical hazards or the health hazards presented by the chemical or material must be available to all employees who come into contact with the material. WHEN DO YOU NEED TO HAVE AN MSDS? All workplaces need to have an MSDS available for employees using chemicals during all shifts for each chemical in the workplace. All employees must have access at all times to MSDS files; this implies that if the MSDS files are locked or are not accessible to night time shifts this is not acceptable. WHY DO YOU NEED TO HAVE AN MSDS? Our Hazard Communication Program standard requires that Material Safety Data Sheets be available in order to provide on hand reference information for the physical and hazardous properties of industrial and laboratory chemicals. An inventory of all chemicals or materials in the workplace is mandatory for the health and safety regulations of campus workplaces. HOW DO YOU GET AN MSDS? It is the responsibility of the person ordering or requesting materials from a vendor to acquire the appropriate MSDS for that material. Remember to send EHS a copy for central filing. Most original manufacture labels have the appropriate information but, if not, an appropriate label must be added as soon as the material is received. Please contact EHS if you need assistance.
