Energy Awareness Day
Energy Awareness Day featured the Edison Energy Star Bus and Honda Civic Hybrids from Spreen Honda. The Green Campus Program Interns handed out over 200 hundred Compact Fluorescent Lights to the campus community. Event attendees also had the opportunity to make an Energy Conservation Pledge.
Each person who completed a pledge was entered to win either an iPod Mini or a digital camera. Overall, 200 Energy Conservation pledges were collected from students, faculty and administration.
Rolling Sunlight
On March 17, 2005, the Green Peace Rolling
Sunlight soy bio-diesel solar paneled truck came out to CSUSB in order to educate the campus community about the facts and myths of renewable energy. The Solar panels powered a slushy machine to make "solar slushies" for people interested in learning about solar panels. Students, staff, faculty and administration visited the Green Campus Program table throughout the day. This event influenced CSUSB administration and staff and helped them become more open-minded to the idea of having solar panels at CSUSB.
Throughout the rest of the year Tony Simpson, Director of Facilities Services, spent time researching solar panels. He is currently working to obtain grants and funding to put solar panels on the new College of Education building to be completed in the 2007-2008 academic year.
Fossil Fools Day
On April 1, 2005, the Green Campus Program Interns distributed CFLs and information to educate the campus community about the importance of fuel efficiency.
The fliers they handed out included information about ways to conserve fuel and informed students of various interesting facts, such as that tune-ups prevent 900 lbs of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere a year, driving in the highest gear possible without laboring the engine is a fuel-efficient way of driving, and many others. With gas prices rising, and gas shortages looming, people need be educated about how to be fuel-efficient. The Green Campus Program Interns took the initiative to educate people and make the campus community aware of the importance of fuel efficiency.
Environmental Expo
On April 22, 2005, the Green Campus Interns participated in the Environmental Expo, an event for the San Bernardino County
community as well as CSUSB campus community. Interns collaborated with the Environmental Educational Research Center and made their table a hit at Expo by giving out free Compact Fluorescent Lamps. Environmental Expo takes place at CSUSB Coussoulis Arena. The Green Campus Interns teamed up with Dr. Stoner, Ada Ramirez, and Facilities Services to have a light display with different types of fluorescent lighting.
CSUSB interns found that the best way to save energy and reduce
consumption was to let people know about Compact Fluorescent Lamps, which are also called energy saving light bulbs. Green Campus Interns gave out 400 CFLs to people from the CSUSB campus community and people from the San Bernardino community. Interns also made fliers that provided people with energy conservation tips that could help them reduce energy consumption at home and at school.
Eco Trivia
On Wednesday, June 1st, over 30 residents filled the Village Square to participate in Eco-Trivia. Residents had the chance to win a PSP (Playstation Portable) and an iPod shuffle, by correctly answering environmental trivia questions. The question categories included the following: recycling, water, energy, and pollution. Participants raced to raise their hand and be the first to answer the questions. When a contestant answered a question correctly, he or she received a raffle ticket for a chance to win a prize. The more questions a contestant answered correctly, the greater the chance of winning a prize he or she had. The raffle was held at the end of the game, turning A.J. Venezuela into the luck winner of the PSP.
End of Year Luau
The Green Campus Luau was held at the end of the year. The event featured "Pull the Plug," an art competition that displayed works of art in support of energy efficiency and/or energy conservation from the Visual Arts department. There was also an Energy Trivia Game in which students competed to win prizes such as Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP), iPod shuffle and gift certificates to the campus bookstore.

Powerhouse
During the Welcome Week, September 19-23, 2005, Green Campus teamed up with the Office of Housing and Residential Life
to bring the newly settled in residents "Powerhouse." With the campus' Coyote Radio station broadcasting right from the spot and jazzing it up with up-beat music, dodge ball competition, a Velcro Wall, and free pizza and compact fluorescent lamps, the residents had a chance to enjoy the day while learning about various campus environment-oriented clubs and organizations. Environmental Education, CSUSB Recycling and the Green Earth Club had tables set up to help educate students about the benefits of recycling and
being environmentally friendly. Attendees also had the chance to tour the Edison/Energy Star Bus, play an Energy Trivia game, and many signed Energy Pledges. Awesome prizes including an Energy Star DVD player, Stereo and PlayStation Portable, and gift certificates to Target and Wal-Mart were raffled off to those who participated.
Facilities Management Conference
On Tuesday, October 25th, 2005 Green Campus Interns attended the 2005 Cal State University Facilities Management Conference held at Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel in Anaheim, California. The conference began on Sunday, October 23rd, and concluded on Tuesday, October 25th. Green Campus interns from CSU Humboldt, CSU Chico and CSU San Bernardino presented the practices and efforts they have made at their respective campuses through the Green Campus Program. After these presentations, the session continued with a round table discussion between the interns and the audience.
Halloween Phantoms
Dressed up in the spirit of Halloween Felicity Blue and Menya battled the phantoms that haunt CSUSB residents - Phantom Loads. Felicity and Menya handed out 100 surge protectors to campus residents, explaining that eliminating Phantom Loads cuts down wasted energy and saves money.
A Phantom Load is the electricity that an appliance consumes in its "off" mode if it is plugged in. The best way to eliminate Phantoms Loads is to plug appliances that have clocks, memories, remote controls, microprocessors and instant-on features into surge protectors and turn the surge protectors off during the night or when appliances are not in use.
Heating and Air Conditioning Tour
On December 1st, 2005, the Green Campus Program Interns took a tour of the Heating and Air Conditioning (HAC) facility.
The HAC staff maintains and operates the heating and air conditioning for the CSUSB campus. The Central Plant makes and distributes high temperature hot water, chilled water, compressed air and softened domestic hot water to campus buildings via an underground utility tunnel. The Green Campus Program Interns started their tour in the central plant, which is fitted with a state of the art Distributed Digital Control EMS system that helps the HAC staff maintain the heating and air throughout the campus. The tour of the central plant also included into on the Thermal Energy Storage tank and a look into the boiler.
One of the ways that CSUSB cuts down on its energy cost is by utilizing the Thermal Energy Storage (TES) tank. To avoid using the electric water chillers during on-peak hours, the HAC staff runs the water chillers at night, when it's less expensive. The chilled water is then stored in the TES tank during the day, while the chillers are turned off.
